Birth Control Effectiveness: Grapefruit and Other Dangers that Lower Contraceptive Effectiveness

Monday, April 28th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Lilith_Mill] Lilith Mill Do you drink grapefruit juice every morning? Have you taken St. Johns wort recently? Hormonal birth control pills can interact with many other things. Find out what you are doing that might lower your birth controls effectiveness even if you didnt know. Timing. It is important to take your birth control pill at the same time every day. Aim to take it within the same hour, if possible. This is particularly important for progestin-only pills. If you are constantly late with your pills, choose another time that is more convenient for you. Consider setting your watch to beep, or another similar reminder to help you take your pills at the right time. Storage. Dont store your medicine someplace that is too hot or too cold. You want a place that is out of direct sunlight, such as a drawer. Heat and cold can affect different medications different ways, and often they can lower the effectiveness. Birth control pills, like all other kinds of pills, are a type of medication. This means that you need to always inform your doctor and pharmacist of what kind of birth control you are on. This is to help you avoid any complications or bad interactions between drugs. Here are some things that interact with birth control. (For more information on how hormonal birth control works, and the risks and side effects, as well as other birth control options, visit www.theguideto-birthcontrol.com) Some antibiotics. Rifampin, or Rifapentine is an antibiotic generally used to treat tuberculosis. Other antibiotics are generally fine when you are on the pill, however. Demeclocyclene and doxycyclene are two other antibiotics that can interfere with your birth control. Ask your doctor for other alternatives, and make sure that you get prescribed something that wont interfere with your contraceptive plan. St. Johns Wort. This is an herbal remedy that you can buy at any pharmacy. It is not prescription or over the counter. It helps combat depression. However, it also lessens the effectiveness of birth control, and as such, should not be taken without consulting a health care professional. Grapefruit and Grapefruit Juice. Grapefruit contains a compound that slows the absorption of estrogen hormones to the body. This means that it does not affect progestin-only pills. Antifungal medications. Certain medications that are taken orally to treat yeast infections can disrupt oral contraceptives. This includes griseofulvin. Antihistamines. There is currently a debate in the medical community if anti-allergy medications, or antihistamines can be linked to the failure of birth control. Anticonvulsants. Many medications taken to prevent seizures can lessen the effectiveness of birth control pills. Speak to your doctor before dealing with these. Some other drugs that might interact with your birth control include corticosteroids, bronchidilators, and certain anxiety medications. These are not entirely confirmed, so ask your health care professional about interactions. These interactions apply to other methods of hormonal birth control as well, including the Patch, the Vaginal Ring, and Depo-Provera. Just as your other medication can affect your birth control, remember that your birth control can also affect your other medication. Avoiding negative drug interactions is important for you on both counts, so always ask your doctor or pharmacist about drug interactions when you get a new prescription. How Did You Hear About Us?

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

By Kevin Stirtz One of the best things you can do for your business is to ask new customers how they found out about you. But when you do this, dont expect to get accurate information. I know this sounds strange, but it makes sense, I promise. If you make decisions about how to promote your business, then obviously you want to know how your customers find out about your business. So, you ask. The trouble is the information you get when you ask this questions is not always accurate. In fact its mostly inaccurate. My estimate is that it’s about 25% accurate at best. There are two reasons for this. One reason is that people simply do not remember. People dont remember because they have other, more important, things to occupy their mental space. Your business and your marketing are not tops on their list of priorities. (Sorry!) But, they want to give you an answer (because you asked) so they say some thing makes sense. I saw your ad in the yellow pages they might say. Or I think I found you in the phone book. I know because I do the same thing. Its not that were dishonest. We just want to be helpful. A friend of mine told me about a survey they did once for an event they helped promote. They asked people how they found out about the event and over half of them said they heard about it on the radio. On the surface this sounded like great marketing feedback. But there was one problem. They never promoted this event on the radio. People said I heard about it on the radio because they wanted to be helpful and because they listened to the radio a lot. So, it made sense (to them) that they probably heard about the event on the radio. The second reason this sort of feedback is usually not accurate is because people hear about your business in many ways. Remember, if youre doing your marketing well you are probably using more than one medium to deliver your message to your market. Depending on your budget and market you might be using five or more different ways to let people know who you are and what you do. Its not hard to find five or more ways to promote your local business: *On site signage *Yellow pages *Bus bench *Newspaper ad *Direct mail piece *Coupon shopper *Newspaper insert *Networking *TV *Radio *Local sponsorships This is good because it builds both awareness and credibility for your local business. (Remember, the more ways a person hears about your business, the more credible and memorable your message becomes to them.) The trouble is, people are not going to remember (or tell you) they saw it in all these different places. Theyll give you the name of one place they saw your ad. (Usually the most recent place they saw it.) So, we have a marketing paradox. To get the best results you want your message to be seen by people in multiple ways. But, that makes it impossible to determine (with any accuracy) which media is working best. And you want to know what media works best so you can make the best use of your marketing dollars. What do we do about this? It depends on a lot of factors like your business, your budget, your marketing goals, etc. It also depends on how important tracking marketing ROI is to your business. One of the big obstacles to tracking results is scale. As a small, local business, if you went to the expense of trying to survey and track every type of marketing available to your business, youd spend much more on tracking and surveying than you would on the marketing itself. If you have a multi-million dollar marketing budget then you can afford to do some serious testing. Once your testing shows you reasonable results, then you roll out the big campaigns on a larger scale. But that only works because your testing costs are a tiny fraction of your whole marketing plan. But, for those of us with small, local businesses, this method simply does not work. The testing would eat up most (or all) of our marketing budgets. However there are some things you can do to try to monitor what is working. Over the next few months I will be writing in more detail about these. (We dont have room here in one article to cover them properly.) In the meantime, here are some tips to make your local marketing work better and to help you monitor it. 1. Establish a budget and commit to it. Consider this as important as your rent or payroll. Dont make it a low priority unless your revenue and profitability are low priorities. 2. Decide what you want to say and whom you want to say it to. Keep the message simple, clear and concise. 3. Decide if you want to increase awareness for your brand or if you want a direct response. These are two DIFFERENT goals and they require different tools and strategies. 4. Remember your goal is EXPOSURE. You want to expose your market to your message as often as you can within your established budget. So spend your marketing dollars to buy this exposure as effectively as you can. 5. Stick to it for a reasonable amount of time. Dont quit after a couple months. Give it time to work. 6. Get feedback from customers, friends, business associates, employees. Try to find out WHO is seeing your message and HOW they are seeing it. Always be willing to tweak and tune it as you go, based on feedback. 7. Watch your revenue and your new customer activity. Does it go up or down as you implement this marketing? Remember, they key to getting more customers is to let more people know who you are, what you can do for them and why they should consider doing business with you. Focus your resources on making sure your potential customers know you and remember you. Then they will consider doing business with you. If you focus too much on tracking, you can end up wasting time and money on efforts that do not build your business. —————————- More customers! More revenue! More profits! Engineer Term - Civil and Environmental Engineer

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

By Arie Dipareza Syafei The most interesting part is that, before engineering like the way it is now, it was once only divided into only two fields: civil and military engineering. So, in other words, civil engineering is regarded as the oldest engineering field. Civil engineering was used to distinguish it from military engineering. Basically, the field under both military and civil are very similar. They are dealing with almost the same activities such as building bridges, canals, constructions, include but not limited to, wider area, hydraulics, transportation, geotechnical. Basic disparity among those two is located on the purpose. While one serves for public concern, in some cases, acts on public behalf, the another serves to fulfill military needs. That what John Smeaton feel when he built structures, constructions, roads in England. He realized that these facilities were made for public, not designated for military, thus that was why he claimed himself as civil engineer. He is well known as a “father of civil engineering”. More details about him can be found on another source. Since that, the development civil engineering itself has brought to the differentiation between civil engineer and environmental engineer. Environmental engineers involve on all environmental related problems. They work on planning, exercise on designing and in process of decision making as well. Several areas that environmental engineers must get involved with, air pollution, land remediation, water and water treatment, hazardous waste management, environmental toxicology, risk management and risk assessment, to a certain extent public health. They may also be implicated by such case related to environmental management, regional planning, river management, on a wider topic, environmental policy and management. The latest even been made as one of major course in graduate institute of environmental engineering. Topics that environmental engineers get involved can not just be limited on what above mentions. Because, there are extensive and huge bulb that we, environmental engineer, may enter. For example, we may also actively preserve wildlife, concerns with worldwide issue such as acid rain, global warming. Global warming is even still under great dispute between environmentalists and global warming skeptics. This is also an opportunity for environmental engineer to get the truth. http://envirodiary.com/2007/03/01/engineer-term-civil-and-environmental-engineer/ Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Arie_Dipareza_Syafei http://EzineArticles.com/?Engineer-Term—Civil-and-Environmental-Engineer&id=478254 buy credit score 2000 dollar personal online loan for bad credit equifax and free credit report unsecured bad credit loan

Making New Friends Can Be Extremely Satisfying For Retirees!

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By Cynthia Barnett After retiring, you may find yourself needing to make new friends. Perhaps your other friends are still employed or maybe you simply want to find new friends with whom you can share this wonderful new experience. Whatever, the reason may be, making new friends after retirement can be a blast and doesnt have to be a scary or frustrating process. In this brief but informative article, we will discuss five proven tips that you can use today to make new friends. So, sit back, relax, grab a cup of coffee and get ready to learn. 1. Desire to meet new people. First and foremost, you must have the desire to meet new friends. If you are happy with the friends that you already have and they seem to meet all of your companionship needs, you may not be motivated to meet new people. Instead, you may feel comfortable and not ready to venture out into meeting new people. If however you truly believe in your heart and soul that this is a great time to meet new people and youre open and receptive to meeting them then youll be very successful in your friend quest. For those of you that arent sure, just remember that making new friend takes absolutely nothing away from your current friendships and may in some ways enhance them. 2. Visit new places. Second, once youve decided that now is a great time to make new friends, you should take some time and visit places in which you may meet new people. Some places that you may consider are senior activity centers, part district sponsored events, health clubs, churches, extracurricular classes such as computer, art, and photography classes, etc. They key here is to find people that share common interest with you and then discuss your commonalities with them. Remain friendly and optimistic and feel confident and in no time at all, youll garner up a new friendship with someone great. 3. Use nontraditional meeting places. Third, try meeting friends in nontraditional settings by utilizing the internet or snail mail. Pen pals and internet buddies can be very exciting and satisfying friends. However, you must be very careful not to divulge personal information and take your time actually meeting them face to face. This is because there are many unscrupulous people that wish to do damage to innocent people. 4. Nurture your new friendships. Fourth, you must remember to nurture your new friendships. That is, in order to have a friend, you must be a friend. By actively seeking new friendships when you find them and consistently demonstrating kindness, thoughtfulness, loyalty and honesty at all times, youll not only make someone feel good but youll inspire your new friend to do the same. 5. Enjoy the meeting process. Fifth, enjoy the meeting process. Although change can be difficult, it can be fun. Meeting new friends is one of lifes greatest rewards and as you embark on this new adventure, enjoy yourself and relish in the friend making process. In closing, making friends doesnt have to be difficult. In fact, it can be a fun and rewarding experience if you are motivated, frequently visit interesting places, try non traditional methods of meeting people, commit yourself to being a true friend and enjoy the friend meeting process. In no time at all, youll have a new friend, one that will continue to grow and mature over time. Get Paid For Survey

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By Curtis Reynaud If you’ve spent any time at all looking for ways to make money from home or make money online or home business opportunities, you’ve probably run into the get paid for survey opportunity. And, if you’re reading this you were rightly skeptical, thinking, Do people really get paid for taking surveys online? The short answer is yes. People really do sit at their computer, offer up their opinions and get paid by check, Paypal or even products and services. It’s true. But, why you might ask. Who’s paying out money for these surveys. It’s Called Market ResearchCorporations worldwide pay millions and millions of dollars each year to conduct research to discover which products and services their market likes and why. They do this, so they can improve products, so that even more people will purchase them (also to be able to put New and Improve on the label). It’s a well respected business practice to listen to your customers to help determine the direction of your business. One of the most direct ways to do this is to conduct surveys. There are focus groups where you get in a round table discussion with other consumers in a similar demographic and offer up your thoughts on products. There are refund, warranty and contest forms that you fill out that ask for opinions about the products. And, now, thanks to the Internet, there are online surveys. There’s probably not a better, quicker, more economical way to get good, hard data from a market than the Internet. Thus, the Get Paid for Survey online marketplace has exploded. Types of Survey OpportunitiesThere are three basic types of surveys you’ll will have an opportunity to take in your online surfing adventures. 1. A survey directly from a company. You have spent some time on a company’s website or you bought a product from them. This is a perfect time for the company to ask you your opinion about their products and services. Many times companies will bribe you with a drawing entry to win a product if you complete the survey. 2. A survey group that has gathered surveys from numerous companies and put them all together in one package. You sign up, add your contact information and then start taking the dozens and dozens of surveys. These survey groups oftentimes have drawings for trips, electronics and more for signing up. You will also get paid for taking surveys either by Paypal, check or even free product. 3. There are groups out there that have tested all of the survey groups and direct company surveys and have come up with the best opportunities. The best of these groups have information about how much certain surveys pay out (before you even sign up for the survey) and if they are legitimate (i.e. Do the payout). They also oftentimes have updates, so that you have the latest survey options and know the latest payout numbers and/or if certain offers have disappeared. It’s a Mad, Mad Survey WorldBecause of the billions of dollars corporations spend in market research and development, the online survey world has attracted many, many scam artists and shady business practitioners. You must be on your toes and keep your BS detector in tune as you muddle through different opportunities and offers as you consider taking paid surveys online. That best advice is to find a well-respected group (see number 3 above), pay the one-time fee to get their well-researched paid survey information and get busy taking surveys online for cash. Indeed, there are real people out there that make a decent living as the get paid over and over for surveys. Get more information on the most highly respected survey groups out there and steer clear of all the scam artists looking for easy prey. Yes, you can get paid for survey taking, you just need to get my recommendations for the best survey groups to sign up with. The Beautiful Absolute of Truth

Monday, April 14th, 2008

By Annette Bridges What is truth? This is not a new question. Perhaps the question’s most memorable voice was Pontius Pilot when he posed it to a silent Jesus. Probably most everyone would agree that much of early Christian literature was first collected and reported through oral traditions among early Christians. With few written documents. And written records found show that there were as many differing viewpoints among early Christians as there are today. Consequently, most historians recognize some embellishments probably occurred over time. As well as information left out. And some authors’ accounts destroyed. In fact, some historians have suggested that we have lost 85 percent of Christian literature from the first two centuries. And that percentage only refers to the literature that we know about. So our knowledge from the roots of Christianity may always only be in part. Do any of these facts impact our love and faith in the Bible and its validity? They don’t for me. That’s because I don’t believe the spiritual meaning of the Word is contingent on human details. For me, the spiritual sense can be felt in heart, regardless of details included or not. It does disturb me to think that anyone believed they needed to determine what I can know and understand as truth. For example, when I think of the various ancient religious writings that have been surfacing in recent years, what bothers me is that someone long ago decided I couldn’t read these writings and decide for myself what I wanted to believe. Or that someone thought they needed to shape or interpret truth for me and the rest of humanity for all time. Truth is what it is. Changeless. Eternal. Lies may be told and believed as truth for centuries. This doesn’t change whatever is the truth. New lies may be told today. These do not change whatever is the truth. I do realize that opinions and interpretations of what is understood as truth will be as varied as the number of individuals voicing their opinions and interpretations. This was true centuries ago and I suspect, will likely be true in future times as well. I think the quest to understand truth is an individual life journey. I can only answer what I myself understand of truth. I think the same is true for all who write about what they understand of truth. And even then, the challenge is in finding the words to express the spiritual meaning of that which is spiritual. Christian author, Mary Baker Eddy, wrote about this challenge. She said English as well as all other languages are “inadequate to the expression of spiritual conceptions and propositions, because one is obliged to use material terms in dealing with spiritual ideas.” So the search to understand truth continues. And in our search, we question, consider, ponder, explore the possibilities of truth and what it means in our lives. We want to know truth. We long for the most perfect and accurate truth there is in every aspect of our lives. Be it in science, manufacture, art, religion or history. Perhaps this is because of our innate spiritual nature. With a God of truth as our Creator, it would be natural for us to be drawn toward the nature of our source perfect truth. For us to desire to understand who we are and our purpose for being. Truth never changes. But clearly, our understanding of truth does. And it should. It’s called progress. Growth. And that’s life. Perhaps one reason for controversial responses to newly discovered ancient writings are because some details challenge truths humanity has longed believed. In my own search to understand truth, I am endeavoring to keep myself open-minded to truth’s infinite possibilities. I try to approach each possibility with reasonable consideration and exploration. Truth is what it is. Whether it is what I’ve always believed or something entirely different. I want to know the truth. Of truth, Eddy quotes Agassiz, the celebrated naturalist and author, who said: “Every great scientific truth goes through three stages. First, people say it conflicts with the Bible. Next, they say it has been discovered before. Lastly, they say they have always believed it.” So, I’ll keep on reading whatever my fellow truth-seekers write. We learn from each other. It’s all part of the journey to understand what is truth? Annette Bridges is a freelance writer and lives on a north Texas ranch with her husband, John. Trolling Lures For Pacific Blue Marlin

Friday, April 11th, 2008

By Adrian Watt Although most of the Gamefishing my clients enjoy aboard Bite Me is light to medium tackle, I occasionally get the opportunity to break out the bent butt 80s and go after marlin. Every encounter with these monsters is a learning experience. We have learnt a few things along the way and for what its worth, I will be posting a few examples. You can learn from them, or laugh at them. I recommend both. 2.30pm heading away from the Kadavu Seamount 1. Trolling a spread of 4 lures near the Kadavu seamount A purple Hollowpoint Cabo Killa on the long rigger, and a blue/white/yellow/pink Black Bart Hot Breakfast on the short rigger, both lures with a single 10/0 Stainless steel hook stiff rigged on wire. 19 feet of 400lb wind-on and 9 feet of 300lb Ande leader. Short and long corners were a huge silver / yellow custom MBT Monster and a John Lau Linda, both 12/0 double hook loose shackle rigged at about 45 degrees. (Pakula style) A large blue of about 600lbs comes in from the right, nails the short rigger, (skipper guns the boat) then crosses over and nails the long rigger as that lure passes her as well. Two Penn International 80s howling. The fish then charges away in the opposite direction to the boat on the surface for a few seconds and then disappears. (Pandemonium on deck- is it a double hook-up? Who goes in the chair ? lots of yelling coming from the bridge). Angler standing by each rod till we find out exactly whats going on. (I know I know, immediate failure to comply with IGFA Rules - but you try standing and indefinitely holding a screaming bent butt 80 with 25lbs of drag Hays Handle or not) 5 seconds later the blue emerges only 40 yards behind the boat and launches vertically clean out of the sea giving everybody a magnificent image of a huge blue, side on, silver and golden flanks, 15 feet in the air. The blue seems to hang, suspended in the air whilst 6 jaws hit the deck then crashes back in a fit of anger, throws both lures and disappears. Anglers wind in tangled mess of two lures with both leaders heavily scuffed for several feet ahead of each lure. One of the hooks had its point bent. What went right ? Well, we went to the right place. (had another small blue earlier on a skipbait)We ran the right lures in the right colours. (lures imitating the skipjack tuna and mahi that were in the area)Our hooks were sharpWe gunned the boat after the strike to help set the hook. What went wrong Single hook stiff cable rig is not the way to go. The blue was able to throw both lures. If they had been rigged with a 2 hook loose shackle rig, the trailing hook may have swung over or under the bill and given us a hook-up. If we had still run single hook rigs (because of extra weight killing the lure action) it might have been better if we had not used a stiff wire rig and used heavy mono instead, allowing the hook to swing a little. One of the hooks had its point bent. It had tried to penetrate but the point area, being very sharp, was also thin compared to the gauge of the hook. The line pressure must have been trying to set the hook at an angle to the direction of the hook point and instead of driving the point in, it bent it. In my humble opinion If you are fishing for blue marlin, I recommend a two hook rig or a single hook set well back in the skirt and rigged on heavy mono to give it some flexibility. Yes, a 2 hook rig can pin a marlins jaws shut so you absolutely must remove the hooks and yes- a big mahi mahi on the deck with one hook in its mouth and another flailing around is a nightmare for any deckie but if you are worried about that, go with a single Duratin hook on mono. (we do worry about that) Dont hone your hook points so much so that the point is long and thin. By all means have a sharp point but keep that point length shorter rather than longer. As to whether or not you should use hooks where the point is parallel to the shank (like the Shogun T481 or Maruto 1983) or turned in slightly towards the shank (like the Mustad 7691 or Maruto 1962) ? Jury is still out. I know some skippers use one of each in their large lures with the trailing hook being the turned in style. I suspect that the whole issue of hook rigs in large Marlin lures is a hotbed of discussion. I have posed the question to Tim Simpson, the Editor of BlueWater magazine. It may be that the next issue of the magazine has some interesting comments from professionals such as Peter Pakula. Oh, by the way the Feb/Mar issue has a lead story on the top Blue marlin skippers favourite lures and how they like to rig them. Why the Low GI Diet is the Key to Your Weight Loss Goals!

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By Wesley Atkins Losing weight is one of the hardest goals Americans annually seek to accomplish. The weight loss industry is huge and incorporates every type of fad diet, pill, cream, and lotion possible. Instead of falling prey to one of these lose weight quickly fads, entrust your weight loss into something that will guarantee you results: a low GI diet. This diet is certainly nothing new and does not require purchase of any expensive diet foods that are usually packed with preservatives. A low GI diet is much more than a typical dietit is truly a change in your lifestyle, health, and overall well being. What does GI Stand for Anyway? The GI in GI diet stands for Glycemic Index. The Glycemic Index is based on the carbohydrate content of food and how quickly those carbohydrates affect your blood glucose level. Foods with a high Glycemic Index are quickly digested and turned into sugar. It is no surprise that these foods usually lack necessary vitamins or nutrients and contain needless calories and fats. Foods with a high Glycemic Index (foods ranking 70 or greater on the scale) include: * Foods high in sugar or glucose * Baked or mashed potatoes * White Rice * Regular (not whole grain) bread * Cookies, cakes, muffins, doughnuts * Junk foods A Little Thought and Preparation Make a Big Difference The method of food preparation also affects the Glycemic Index. Foods that are cooked or pre-cooked have a higher GI. For example, instant oatmeal or grits have a higher Glycemic Index than the same foods cooked in a more traditional manner. Due to this reason, individuals who are on a low GI diet tend to put more thought into foods consumed and tend to consume less pre-cooked, pre-packaged foods filled with preservatives or additives. Its All About Choices By choosing to consume foods with a low Glycemic Index, you are making a conscious effort to consume foods that are nutritious and good for you. This diet is also critical for individuals with diabetes or other conditions that make it necessary to monitor their blood sugar levels. Make the conscious commitment to embark on a low GI diet and create a healthy lifestyle. What foods are classified as low GI? You will certainly be surprised with the incredibly long list of options available to individuals currently pursuing a low GI diet! These low GI (55 or less) foods include: * Most fruits (apples, pears, oranges, berries, etc.) * High fiber grains (bran, whole grain wheats) * Pastas * Whole milk * Low-fat yogurt * Lentils * Whole grain cereals (Special K, All Bran, etc) These foods are readily incorporated into a daily diet and intermixed with foods that have a medium rank on the Glycemic Index between 56 and 69. These foods should be eaten sparingly, thoroughly mixed with the low GI foods. Monday, April 7th, 2008

By Dr John Anne Today is the era of smart work rather than hard work. One has to be smart enough to handle all those difficulties and strains in the most apposite fashion. This can only be achieved when you are both mentally and physically fit. To attain this fitness one has to be regular in his or her routine work and should strictly follow a diet. As we are progressing, we are making our life more physically comfortable but mentally stressful. This is leading to early aging signs and diseases that were initially considered to be an old age disease. It is very difficult to change my life style? Yes, it is tough to change our life style. It is understood that we have to carry out our life activities or profession according to the requirements of others rather than to our comforts for making a living. But there is a solution to this problem and is known as triphala. Triphala is one of the most talked about herb these days. I am saying triphala an herb as it is nowadays considered to as a single herb but in reality it is not an herb. It is a combination of three herbs. What is triphala? Triphala is an ayurvedic traditional medicine that is popular as rasayana or the rejuvenator. Triphala is the combination of three herbs. These herbs are:- Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) Bhibitaki (Terminalia belerica) How would triphala help me? Triphala is a miraculous ayurvedic preparation that has been a drug of choice of ayurvedic doctors world wide for treating any kind of disease. It might be surprising for you that Charka Samhita, the book of ayurvedic medicine has mentioned about triphala in its very first chapter. The powerful mixture of Amalaki, Haritaki and Bhibitaki makes it divine nectar that has the potential to treat any kind of disease. Immuno-modulator - In ayurveda triphala is defined as the total health rejuvenator. It helps in promoting the general health and bodies immunity. Immunity is one of the most essential aspects for healthy life. It helps in providing our body with the resistance required to fight against the external substances. Triphala helps in promoting the production of antibodies that fight against the antigens that invade our body after crossing the bodys barrier. Triphala also promotes the production of T-helper cells that again strengthens our defense mechanism. Anti-oxidant - Triphala has powerful anti-oxidant agents that help in regularizing the metabolism of cells and ease their proper functioning. This reduces the risk of production of free radicals that are the main cause of aging. It also stimulates the functioning of cell organelles like mitochondria, golgi bodies and nucleus that play a vital role in proper functioning of the cell. Indigestion - Triphala is magic for digestive problems. It not only works as a mild laxative but also helps in improving the peristaltic movements in the gastro intestinal tract. It stimulates liver to secrete bile juices that are very essential for fat metabolism. It helps in maintaining the proper pH level of G.I. tract. Constipation triphala is one of the best colon cleansers and is highly recommended in constipation. It helps in detoxification of the body. It has gained the popularity as the mild laxative. Worms and infections - It is highly effective in suppressing the infections and worm infestation. It also helps in expelling out the ringworm and tapeworm infestation. It is also effective in maintaining the proper conditions in our body that is highly toxic for growth of microorganism and worms. Anemia - It is also helpful in increasing the production of red blood cells thereby very effective in treating a condition known as anemia (a condition where there is decrease in amount of hemoglobin) Diabetes - Triphala is very effective in treating diabetes mellitus. It helps in stimulating the pancreas. Pancreas contains islet of langerhans that secretes insulin. Insulin is responsible for maintaining the proper glucose level in the body. More over due to its bitter taste it is also advisable to be taken in hyperglycemia. Obesity - It is highly recommended in obese patients. Due to its properties it is helpful in reducing the fat amount in the body. It targets the adipose cells that are responsible for the deposition of fats in the body. Congestion - Triphala is responsible for clearing the congestion in the respiratory tract and sinuses in the face to facilitate easy breathing and also restrict the chance of bacterial growth ion the mucus. Proactive Medicine

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

By Danny Siegenthaler Proactive medicine on the other hand aims to maintain homeostasis. That is, it aims to maintain health on the physical, mental and emotional levels. The principle behind proactive medicine is prevention is better than cure. In traditional Chinese medicine, for example, patients used to visit their doctors while they were well and healthy and they paid the doctor for his/her services, however, if a patient became ill the treatments were free. The assumption being that the doctor did not do his/her job properly and therefore the patient become ill. Luckily, this is no longer the case, even in China. If one of the doctor’s patients died, irrespective of the cause, the doctor was forced to hand a red lantern in his surgery and this would tell all his patients how many of the doctors patients had died. Boy, talk about having to be accountable. Proactive medicine includes advising patients about diet, exercise, stress management and lifestyle choices. It also included the use of preventative forms of medicine, examples include: massage and aromatherapy treatments as well as Acupuncture, Chinese and western herbal medicine. Each of these forms of therapy or medicine acknowledges the fact, that there are ways to strengthen the bodys resistance to disease and maintain health and wellbeing. The effects of massage for example, have been shown to work on a variety of levels. Physically, massage improves blood and lymph circulation, lowers blood pressure, improves immune and digestive system functioning and increases metabolism. Massage also speeds recovery time for athletes and others with injuries, as well as decreasing pain in many chronic conditions such as tension headaches, back problems and arthritis. Psychologically, massage calms the nervous system, decreases stress and boosts energy levels. Aromatherapy, used as a proactive medicine, has similar effects to massage, with the additional benefit of the therapeutic properties contained in the essential oils. In addition, Yoga and Tai Chi, both quite well known in the west these days, are forms of proactive medicine, as they aim to establish and maintain the energy balance of the body. Both these forms of exercise are well documented in helping people to regain and maintain a good level of fitness, flexibility and overall health. They have been practiced for thousands of years in both India and China and have well and truly stood the test of time in terms of proving their effectiveness. Both Tai Chi and Yoga improve overall fitness, balance, coordination, and agility. They have also been shown to lower blood pressure and heart rates, promote relaxation, and release stress and tension. People who practice Tai Chi or Yoga on a regular basis tend to have good posture, flexibility, and range of motion, are more mentally alert, and sleep more soundly at night. Some other conditions positively affected by Tai Chi and Yoga include: Chronic pain and headaches, arthritis and osteoporosis, heart disease, depression and anxiety, high blood pressure, asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema, and many more. Tai Chi and Yoga thus perform a vital function as proactive medicines, with far-reaching benefits way beyond just physical fitness. Similarly, the use of meditation and relaxation as proactive medicines are not to be underestimated. Generally speaking, meditation is an experience of relaxing the body, quieting the mind, and awakening the spirit. There are many types of meditation, and each has specific techniques and skills that can be learned. The benefits of meditation are, generally, quite extraordinary. For many people, the physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual benefits of meditation might include: higher levels of energy, creativity, and spontaneity; lower blood pressure; increased exercise tolerance; better concentration; decreased depression and anxiety; fewer cravings for alcohol and cigarettes; increased job satisfaction, and better relationships with others, just to mention a few. In short, proactive medicine is the best approach to establish and maintain a healthy mind, body and spirit.
