Making a Successful Career Change: 4 Keys to Success

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

By Louise Fletcher Most people who have made the decision to change their careers face the same problem: How can I get hired when I dont have relevant experience? It is true that not many companies will hire you as a graphic artist if you simply send a resume outlining your ten-year career in tax accounting! Even the best resume cannot hide the fact that your previous work experience has not qualified you for the position you seek. The good news is that there are ways to gain entry into your chosen profession. As Nicholas Lore explains in his exceptional career change book, The Pathfinder, you gain admittance into any group, social or professional, by creating agreement. In other words, people are accepted into a group (or career field) because other people agree they belong. Agreement is developed through the things we say, the way we act, the knowledge we have etc. If a struggling, unpublished writer says I hope to be a writer some day, she has already made it clear that she does not consider herself to be a writer. Others will agree with her categorization and accept that she is not a writer. But if she writes every day, submits short stories to small publications, attends writers conferences and writes free articles for websites and local newspapers, she is now beginning to create agreement that she is, indeed, a writer. The goal therefore is to become your new profession. Dont wait until someone hires you before you think of yourself as a computer programmer. Start to think of yourself that way now. Begin gathering the knowledge and experience you will need. Surf websites and chat rooms. Join associations and networking groups. Talk to other programmers. Read books. Practice. And most importantly, build a body of work. The key then is to act as you wish to be perceived. Jeff Davies is a perfect example. A nurse by profession, Jeff was also a talented musician. He wanted to get into the video game industry, writing soundtracks and creating sound effects but he had little success when he first sent out his resume. The few responses he got were standard no-thanks emails. Eventually, a friend suggested that Jeff take a different approach. Instead of sending in his resume, he created a demo reel of music he had written for famous video games. In each case he replaced the existing soundtrack with his own music. Then he started to network his way into the industry, attending game industry conferences and trade shows. He met people and kept a database of his contacts. He subscribed to industry newsletters to keep up to date with technological and industry developments. He created a website and sent a link to key industry figures. He received several calls praising his creative approach although no immediate job offers. Once a month, he stayed in touch with his network of contacts by sending a short email with a snippet of new music attached as an MP3 file. After four months, Jeff was called in to interview for a position as an entry-level sound engineer with an independent game developer. The call came from the companys creative director who had met Jeff a year earlier at a trade show. The company is not Jeffs ideal employer as they make games for children and Jeff is much more interested in roleplaying action games, but he plans to stay there for a year learning all he can and then start to apply to the larger game companies. Jeffs success was well-deserved. He took a proactive approach to his career change and dedicated much of his spare time to demonstrating his skills. By the time he was hired, he already thought and spoke and acted as a video game sound engineer. Jeffs story highlights that career-changers must take a different approach to job search. If you are frustrated with your own job search, try following Jeffs example: 1. Get started. Dont wait for someone to pay you to be what you want to be. Just do it! If you want to prove you can design logos, for example, volunteer to redesign the logo for your friends small business. Or simply redesign some existing corporate logos for demonstration purposes. 2. Learn everything you can. Read books, join associations, go to education events and trade shows. Read newsletters. Visit industry web sites and chat rooms. Learn the language and jargon of the industry you want to enter. Stay up to date with the newest trends and technologies. Become an expert. 3. Make contacts. Build a network of influential people within the field you want to enter. Find creative ways to approach them and maintain the connection once it is made. For example, why not offer to write an article for a trade magazine or website? You can choose a topic which gives you a reason to contact key people within the industry. 4. Find Creative Approaches. Do not rely on the standard resume and cover letter. This will almost always fail when you are trying to make a shift to a new career. Most people will scan your resume to see how your past experience matches with their current needs. Therefore, applying to job postings is unlikely to help you make the change to your new field. Making a career change is both challenging and exciting. The biggest problem you will face is the resistance of others who doubt your qualifications in your new field. The key is to stop looking for your dream job and start doing it. Eventually like Jeff - you will gain acceptance and your transformation will be complete. Diet - An Ugly 4-Letter Word

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Lisa Irby I don’t like the word “diet”. Most of the time people use that word to reference a temporary period in which they plan to lose a certain amount of weight. During this period, they may lose some of the weight by starving themselves and/or depriving their bodies of the “bad” foods they usually overindulge in. Then, when they are satisfied with the weight loss and/or tired of not being able to eat their favorite foods, they go back to their old ways of eating and end up putting on more weight then they had before they started dieting. It’s Time to Change Your Thinking If you want to lose weight, let’s try dropping the word “diet”. It sounds too temporary and is often associated with so many fad diet plans like Atkins, South Beach etc. How about adopting a new phrase…. “New eating habits.” This sounds a lot more permanent and can also mean that you will still enjoy your favorite junk foods as long as you consume them in moderation. Now, your next question may be….”But what if I want to lose the weight quickly”? If you lose the weight too rapidly that may mean you’re starving yourself and/or not getting the necessary nutrition your body needs to be healthy anyway. Second, weight loss that happens too fast can harm your metabolism and cause you to gain weight faster than you did previously if you pick up your bad eating habits again. The key to a healthy and effective weight loss plan is one that cuts out the saturated fats, involves exercise at least 3-4 days per week and increases the amount of fiber and protein you consume on a regular basis. So ignore those fad diet plans that boast about how quickly you can lose weight when you eat 1-2 meals a day or completely cut out all carbs and fat. Believe it or not, we do need some carbs and some fat in our system. The problem comes in when we consume too much them. They aren’t as bad for you if you enjoy them in moderation. Your goal should not be to lose weight in a hurry. You want to lose weight in the most healthy way for your body so you can keep the weight off. When you drop pounds too fast, you run the risk of gaining it back at an even faster rate. Also remember to still treat yourself with the foods you love. Yep…I’m talking about cookies, ice cream cakes, candy etc. Again…eat them in moderation. If you completely deprive yourself of your favorite foods, you’ll get bored and run the risk of going back to your old, bad eating habits. Try Making Healthier Choices Having new eating habits simply means making better food choices. It sounds much better than dieting, and it doesn’t have to mean that you are hungry all the time. Here are some ideas for changes you can make little by little. Remember, this is not a diet plan, it’s a permanent lifestyle that you should stick to from now on. Your body will reward you. Here’s the best part…you will still lose weight! Accompany this new eating plan with cardio exercise and you’ll see even better results. Eat whole grain bread instead of white bread Eat popcorn (stove popped or hot air) instead microwaved Need a light snack? Eat almonds instead of potato chips. If you have to eat potato chips, choose the lower fat brands and eat fewer of them Eat whole wheat pasta instead of white pasta Eat brown rice instead of white rice Drink water instead of soda Eat turkey bacon instead of pork bacon Drink fruit juice with low/no sugar instead of sweetened juice Eat baked potato chips instead of regular chips When you go to a fast food restaurant, order grilled chicken or a salad. When you buy meats, choose the leaner varieties If you drink Starbucks, ask for 2% or soy milk This is my favorite tip. Pick one day a week where you can eat whatever you want! (This is very important and helps prevent burnout.) Just be sure to not overdo it. ;) Notice I’m not suggesting you starve yourself to death like some diets instruct. You’re just making healthier choices by cutting saturated fats while adding fiber and protein. What about counting calories, you ask? This is the beauty of it all. When you make healthier food choices like the ones above, you are going to naturally be cutting calories because the alternate foods I suggested have fewer of them. Now when the pounds start to come off and someone asks you if you’ve been dieting? Tell them “No”. You’ve just developed better eating habits…for life! :) Lisa Irby is the author of http://www.flat-stomach-exercises.com, a site that encourages people to understand their bodies before they begin that ab workout. The Biggest Secret In Internet Marketing

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By A Nghiem In the Internet marketing world, there are many misconceptions and outright lies. But the biggest secret is one that is so obvious that nobody wants to talk about or is even aware of. In this article, I share what I (and many world class marketers) consider to be the biggest secret in Internet marketing. At this point, youre probably wondering? Whats the BIGGEST secret? Before I share this secret with you, let me share a common mistake committed by 99% of Internet marketers. Almost all Internet marketers I know can quote you their opt-in rate and spend hours, days, weeks and even months tweaking their landing pages to get the highest opt-in rate. This is accomplished by asking for as little customer information as possible and casting as wide a net as possible. This usually requires asking for only the first name and the primary email address. In many industries, this results in optimizing for the wrong results. What do I mean by that? I spend a lot of time in multiple industries other than Internet marketing (including real estate, art, etc.) and for a long time, I was focusing on increasing my opt-in rate but rarely closed any sales (my sales for my products and my clients products range from $997 to $25,000 per sale). When I thought about it, I realized that in all of these industries and especially at these price points, the sale is accomplished via the phone, not via the Web. Thus, without realizing it, I wasnt collecting all the necessary information for me to complete a sale (that is, I wasnt asking for a phone number because I knew this would reduce my opt-in rate). Most of the gurus who are teaching list building dont take into account industries that conduct business primarily offline and/or the fact that high-end products are not closed via email alone. Heck, I am not sure that any of them has ever tested their methods in offline businesses! Now, I do a 2-step opt-in rate that allows me to have the highest opt-in rate on the first page and then ask for additional info (including the phone number and mailing address) on the thank you screen. This enables me to follow up via offline methods including postcards, direct mail and even telemarketing. What does this have to do with the biggest secret in Internet marketing? Simplethe most valuable leads often require you to follow up using offline methods. However, this contradicts almost all list building techniques being taught, which almost always teach how to get the highest opt-in rate. In this case, I made more money by having a lower opt-in ratebut I got higher quality leads, which enable me to follow up via offline methods. Again, in many, many industries, the sales happen via the phone and in some cases via the fax and direct mail. So, before you spend too much time focusing on optimizing your opt-in rate alone, think through the sales process and figure out what is the best way to close the sale and collect information for that to happen, even if it means a lower opt-in rate. Now that you know the biggest secret in Internet marketing and the next time somebody brags about their 50% opt-in rate, you will know that he/she is probably optimizing on the wrong thing and leaving WAY too much money on the table. My First Lobster

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Sara Thompson As a child, butter sauce running down my chin was endearing — not so much anymore. And although I may eat my lobster now with a bit more decorum, I continue to eat lobster with the same relish and delight as when I was a ten year old, feasting on my first. I can vividly recall how the platter was set in front of me and I was given the tools to go about the business of eating this amazing looking food. I can remember feeling the cool, smooth cracker in my hand and figuring out how to maneuver it; fitting the shell between the cracker legs at just the right angle to get that distinct satisfying, crunching sound that exposed the juicy white meat. It was like being on a treasure hunt; feeling the thrill when Id find a big piece of lobster meat in an unexpected place. And, just when I thought that I had exhausted the search and ate all there was to be found, Id find another little piece to crack. By the time I finished that first lobster I felt like an explorer in a culinary adventure. It was clear to me way back then, this was not merely dinner; eating a lobster was an experience — a very fun experience! Think for a minute, when else is wearing a bib a thing of honor? Now, all grown up, I find that my dinner companions are always quite entertained as they enjoy witnessing my enthusiastic lobster cracking. They appear delighted by the zest with which I approach the task at hand. Thats the thing about eating a lobster, you have to work for it. I wonder if thats what adds to the pleasure of eating it. Is it true, even with a lobster dinner, that if you toil and expend effort, that the fruits of your labor make it taste even better? Now, lobster tails, served by themselves are wonderful, but definitely a different experience. Arent they the prize without the good fight? With lobster tails, theres no need to master the cracker, no spurting juices, no hunt for the last tidbit of meat; all the things that define eating a lobster as an activity rather than as simply a delicious meal. But dont get me wrong, I would never turn away from a lobster tail and order the chicken. As is true with most of the firsts in our lives, my first lobster will always be memorable. And as is also true of most of those life firsts, the lobsters Ive had since have only been better. Essential Embroidery Supplies

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

By George Royal Before taking up embroidery as an occupation or a hobby, you need to know the different types of important embroidery supplies and accessories that are available. Also keep in mind that each type can be further divided into specific subtypes based on function and utility. Choose the right tools depending on your need, and type of work. The Hoop: An embroidery hoop is a circular tool usually made of wooden material that is used to hold the fabric steady, providing support and stability to the fabric being embroidered. Most hoops have brass screws that can be tightened or loosened if necessary, and come in various shapes and sizes. Popular types include - 1. Tubular Embroidery Hoops: The arms of the hoops are on the outside of the garment and connect to an inner hoop ring. The larger outer ring, on the other hand, is on the inside of the garment. Normally used without the table top. These are the most popular embroidery hoops on the market. 2. Magnetic Embroidery Hoops: These hoops require magnetic assembly. They can be used with or without the tabletop and are typically designed for lightweight and thin garments and fabrics. 3. Jacketback Embroidery Hoops: large wooden hoops that have strong holding power wood because of the wooden. To be used with the tabletop and Jacketback holder. 4. Q-Mag Embroidery Hoops: These hoops use a combination mechanical or magnetic attach plate at two places, suitable for larger fabrics because of its stability. Bobbin Thread: A Bobbin is the spool that holds the thread. The top thread and the bobbin thread form the stitch. Pre-wound Bobbin threads are widely available and come in different types and materials. 1. Continuous-Filament Polyester: Strong, thin, consistent, and does not leave behind any lint so it is the most popular type. 2. Cotton: It allows for a wide range of tension adjustments because of its texture. 3. Spun Polyester: Gaining popularity because of texture similarity with cotton. 4. Nylon: It is the strongest type but may be tough to adjust tension. Embroidery Needles: The type of needle used depends on the type of the embroidery, thread and fabric. Therefore the correct size and type of needle is important when browsing embroidering supplies for your work. These are the basic types of embroidery needles: 1. Tapestry: Has a blunt tip with large eyes. Ideal for threading multiple plies of thread. 2. Milliners: Has small eyes, and typically used for surface embroidery techniques. 3. Sharps: Sharp pointed and small eyed standard needles. 4. Chenille: Has same characteristics with Tapestry needles except for the sharp point. 5. Beading: Long and thin needles generally meant for beadworks. 6. Twin-Pointed: Has a point at each end and a single eye in the middle to be used with a stitching frame. 7. Easy-threading: has a split eye at the top, for easy threading as the name suggests. 8. Trolley: Attached to a ring it slips on the finger, and can be used as a laying tool. Backings and Stabilizers: Backings are important in any type of embroidery because by the amount of stability and support they provide often dictates the quality of the finished product. Here are some common types: 1. Water soluble topping: Put over stitches-observing fabric types, which prevents stitches from sinking into the fabric. 2. Water soluble backing: Generally used for used for embroidering freestanding lace designs on it, or making cutwork. 3. Cutaway Backing This type enables cutting the excess fabric with a pair of scissors. 4. Tearaway Backing This type enables the excess to be torn away after fabric is embroidered. Equip Yourself - What if You’re in an Accident with an Uninsured Motorist

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

By Tara Pingle But picture the situation youd be in if youre rear-ended by someone, sustaining severe injuries and much vehicle damage, and you discover that this other driver has no insurance. Or that they have only the minimum insurance, which comes nowhere near being able to pay for your injuries.No-fault insurance Michigan has been a no-fault state since 1973. Were all required to buy no-fault insurance and in fact, its required before we can get our license plate. Its illegal to drive without it, or to let someone else drive your vehicle without it. Michigan law requires us to buy, in certain minimum amounts: Personal Injury Protection (PIP) to cover the cost of any injuries you sustain in an auto accident, and your lost wages for 3 years (with a cap) Property Protection Insurance (PPI) to cover the cost of any vehicle repair after that accident Residual Liability to cover you when your negligence causes injury to someone elseIf youre still paying for your vehicle, your insurance company may also require you to buy two other items to cover the cost of repairing or replacing your car: Collision, and Comprehensive. The advantage of no-fault insurance is that it simplifies things and potentially speeds up the repair of your vehicle. Your insurance pays your injury and repair bills, and the other drivers insurance pays his. It protects us from being sued. Michigan is not 100% no-faultNo state is 100% no-fault. Michigan is a mix of no-fault and standard liability insurance. In other words, there are exceptions to the no-fault default. If the accident: Happens outside Michigan, or Causes serious injury or death, then the at-fault driver can be sued for damages, if he has insurance. Uninsured and under-insured motorist (UM and UIM) coverage Michigan doesnt require us to buy UM or UIM coverage. Its our choice, and its an added expense on the premium, so many of us dont buy it. And in a no-fault state, the assumption is that our own insurance will pay our bills anyway, so why do we need UM or UIM coverage? But lets think again of that driver who rear-ended you. You have severe injuries whiplash, and maybe the airbag hit you too hard, maybe you hit your head on the glass and you have expensive vehicle repair bills (a rear-end accident can even total your vehicle if it knocks the chassis out of shape). You can sue the other driver if you can prove that he/she caused the accident. But if he has no insurance, chances are that you wont be able to get any compensation. However, if that driver is under-insured, you can potentially get compensation to the value of their insurance, such as it is. Advantage of UM and UIMBut your bills total a higher amount than that. If you have no UM or UIM, you have no other recourse and will have to pay the bills out of your pocket. But lets say you did buy UM and UIM along with your required coverage. Now you can obtain compensation from your insurance company up to the value of your UM/UIM, as well as recovering from the under-insured driver.Hit and run accidents Looking at our rear-end scenario again, if the other driver takes off before you can get any contact information from him, that leaves you with only your own insurance as a source of compensation. If youve bought UM and UIM, you have more coverage than just the PIP and PPI. Enhance your changes with legal help. If youve been in an accident with another driver who turns out to be uninsured or under-insured, the smartest thing to do is immediately consult an experienced accident attorney. The law is complex; there are exceptions to the no-fault law, and every situation is different. Some sound legal advice can help you decide on what course of action to take. You could well be eligible for more compensation than you think. www.jtrucks.com For more information on automobile accident liability, please feel free to contact Jay Trucks of Flint, Michigan.
